Bolts, Nuts & Washers
Get the fixings for brackets, gates, frames and machinery in one range of nuts and bolts. Packs of zinc plated carriage bolts, bolts and washers, nuts bolts and washers, threaded rod in M10 and M16 and penny washers come from Securfix, Securpak, Smiths Ironmongery and Securit.
Sizes follow the metric system, so M6 nuts and bolts, M8 bolts and M10 nuts and bolts refer to the thread diameter in millimetres, with lengths such as an M8 50mm bolt or an M8 100mm bolt listed separately. Carriage bolts have a domed head and square neck that grips in timber, which suits fencing and gate work. M8 penny washers spread the load on soft materials and an M8 anchor bolt is used for fixing into masonry. Washers also come in tap washer form for plumbing.
Match the bolt, nut and washer in thread size, and choose a bolt long enough to pass through the materials with a few threads showing. Zinc plating helps resist rust, but outdoor use in wet conditions may need stainless steel.

Bolts, Nuts & Washers: frequently asked questions
What does M8 mean on a bolt?
M8 means the thread has an 8mm diameter. Nuts and washers must match the same size.
What are carriage bolts used for?
Carriage bolts have a smooth domed head and a square neck that locks into timber, making them popular for fences, gates and decking frames.
What is a penny washer?
A penny washer is a wide, thin washer that spreads the load over a larger area, useful on timber and thin sheet.
How long should a bolt be?
Add the thickness of all parts, plus the washer and nut, and allow a few extra threads beyond the nut.
Can I use zinc plated bolts outdoors?
Zinc plating gives some protection, but constant wet weather may corrode them, so consider stainless steel for harsh exposure.
