Electrical & Lighting: frequently asked questions
What is Part P and does it apply to me?
Part P is the building regulation for electrical safety in homes in England and Wales. New circuits, consumer unit work and most work in bathrooms are notifiable, so use a registered electrician.
Can I change a light switch or socket myself?
Replacing a switch or socket like-for-like is generally not notifiable, but it must be done safely. Switch off and isolate the circuit at the consumer unit first; if unsure, use an electrician.
What IP rating do I need for outdoor or bathroom products?
The IP rating shows protection against dust and water. Outdoor lights are commonly IP44 or higher, and bathroom zones have their own minimum ratings, so check before fitting.
How should I dispose of old batteries and bulbs?
Take them to a battery or electrical recycling point, often found at supermarkets and council recycling centres. Do not put batteries in household bins.
