How to choose lighting
Choose by room, mood and how the light is fitted.
| Type | Best for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Ceiling lights and pendants | Main room lighting | Check bulb cap and maximum wattage |
| Table and floor lamps | Reading and soft accent light | Plug-in, so no wiring needed |
| LED panels and battens | Kitchens, garages and utility rooms | Long life and low energy use |
| Bathroom lights | Damp rooms near baths and showers | Must have the right IP rating for the zone |
| Outdoor lights | Paths, doors and security lighting | Choose IP44 or higher; PIR saves energy |
Lighting: frequently asked questions
Can I fit a new ceiling light myself?
Replacing a light fitting like-for-like is generally not notifiable, but you must isolate the circuit first. Adding new lighting points or fitting in bathrooms should be done by an electrician.
What colour temperature should I choose?
Warm white, around 2700K to 3000K, suits living rooms and bedrooms. Cool white, around 4000K, suits kitchens, bathrooms and workspaces.
Can I use LED bulbs with a dimmer switch?
Only if the bulb is marked dimmable and the dimmer is LED compatible. Otherwise the light may flicker, buzz or fail early.
What IP rating do I need for outdoor lights?
IP44 is a common minimum for outdoor lights, protecting against splashing water. Lights in exposed spots or near the ground may need IP65 or higher.
