Decking Stain & Oil
Bring tired timber decking back to life with a protective finish. This range includes decking oil, decking stain, decking paint and decking protector, mostly from Ronseal, with Cuprinol decking stain and an anti slip decking stain, plus Rustins and Johnstone's options.
Oils soak into the wood and give a natural look, so Ronseal decking oil and Ultimate Protection decking oil suit anyone who wants to keep the grain visible. A decking stain adds colour, with shades from natural pine to rocky grey, silver birch and oak. Decking paint gives solid colour, such as deep blue or sage, and hides a worn surface. For safety on wet boards, anti slip paint for decking or a Cuprinol anti slip decking stain adds grip.
Pick a dry spell and prepare first. Sweep, scrub off moss and algae with a decking cleaner, sand raised grain and let the timber dry out fully. Apply with a brush, pad or roller along the boards in thin coats and avoid pooling in the gaps. Check the pack for drying time, coverage per litre, and how often you should re-coat. Wear gloves and keep pets off while it dries.

Decking Stain & Oil: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between decking oil and stain?
Oil gives a natural, penetrating finish, while stain adds colour and often more protection. Both are brushed on thinly.
How do I make decking less slippery?
Clean off algae first, then apply an anti slip decking stain or add anti slip strips. Moss is a common cause.
When is the best time to treat decking?
Choose dry weather with mild temperatures, and allow the wood to dry for several days after rain.
Can I paint over old decking stain?
Clean and sand off loose finish, then apply a compatible decking paint. Check product guidance for coating over previous treatments.
How many coats of decking oil do I need?
One or two thin coats are typical. Follow the instructions on the can.
