How to choose fixings and hardware
Start with what you are fixing to and how much weight it holds.
| Category | Best for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Screws | Most fixing jobs in wood and walls | Match length and gauge to the job |
| Wall plugs and anchors | Fixing into masonry or plasterboard | Plasterboard needs cavity fixings |
| Nails | Quick timber fixing and joinery | Screws hold better under load |
| Bolts, nuts and washers | Strong joins through timber or metal | Washers spread the load |
| Brackets and hinges | Shelves, doors, cupboards and gates | Check weight ratings |
| Handles, hooks and fittings | Finishing touches and hanging | Measure hole spacing before replacing |
Fixings & Hardware: frequently asked questions
How do I know what my wall is made of?
Knock on it: a hollow sound usually means plasterboard on a stud frame, a solid sound means brick or block. Drill dust can also help, as red or grey dust suggests masonry.
Should I use screws or nails?
Screws hold better and can be removed, so they suit most fixing jobs and anything under load. Nails are faster for framing, fencing and fixing panels.
How much weight can a shelf hold?
It depends on the wall, the fixings, the brackets and the shelf itself; the weakest part sets the limit. Check the ratings on each and use heavy-duty fixings for heavy loads.
What does stainless steel or zinc plated mean?
Zinc plated fixings resist some corrosion and suit indoor use. Stainless steel or galvanised fixings are better outdoors and in damp areas.
