Padlocks & Hasps
Secure sheds, gates, garages and lockers with a padlock and the right hasp. The range includes a brass padlock, laminated steel and aluminium padlocks, combination locks, a long shackle padlock, padbolts, and a hasp and staple in black and zinc plated finishes, from Securit, Squire, Defender, Smiths Locks, Owler & Banks and Era.
Padlock size is quoted as the body width, so a 40mm padlock suits lighter jobs and a 50mm padlock gives a bulkier body and a stronger feel. A long padlock shackle reaches through thick chain or wide gaps, while a short shackle is harder to attack with cutters. Laminated steel and weather resistant models are better for outdoor use, and combination padlocks remove the need to carry a key.
Pick a padlock hasp to match the door: a long hasp spans a gap between door and frame, and wire hasps suit lighter use. Fit the hasp with screws that cannot be reached from the outside. Check the shackle diameter is small enough to fit through the hasp eye. For stronger protection, choose a model with a security rating from the manufacturer, and keep spare keys somewhere safe.

How to choose a padlock and hasp
Match the lock and hasp strength to what you are protecting.
| Type | Best for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Open shackle padlock | General use on lockers and gates | Easier to fit, but shackle is more exposed |
| Closed shackle padlock | Sheds, garages and high-risk sites | Shrouded shackle resists cutting |
| Combination padlock | Gym lockers and shared access | No keys to lose; change codes regularly |
| Weatherproof padlock | Outdoor gates and sheds | Covers help stop rust and frozen locks |
| Hasp and staple | Fitting a padlock to doors and gates | Use coach bolts so screws are hidden when locked |
Padlocks & Hasps: frequently asked questions
What size padlock do I need?
For a shed or gate, 40mm to 50mm is common. Bigger padlock bodies and thicker shackles generally resist cutting better.
What is a long shackle padlock used for?
It is used where the shackle needs to pass through thick chain, double gates or wide hasps. The longer reach gives more flexibility.
Is a combination padlock safe?
Combination padlocks are convenient but vary in strength. Choose a recodeable one and avoid obvious codes.
How do I fit a hasp and staple?
Fix the hasp on the door and the staple on the frame, with the screws hidden when the hasp is closed. Use sturdy fixings into solid timber.
Will a brass padlock rust?
Brass does not rust like steel, but the steel parts inside might. Spray a little lubricant now and then.
