Wall Plugs & Anchors
Fix shelves, brackets, radiators and cabinets securely with the right wall plug. This range includes plastic plugs, wall plug anchor types, screw plugs, hammer fixings, rivets and self drilling fixings, with bulk packs of 1000, from Securfix, Securpak, Rawlplug, Plasplugs and Jubilee, plus hose clips.
Wall fixings depend on the wall. A standard plastic plug grips well in brick, block and concrete, and universal plugs such as Rawlplug brown plugs are made to work in several materials. Plasterboard and hollow walls need fixings that open behind the board, since a normal plug will not hold much weight. Wall plugs and screws sold together save guessing, but check that the screw size suits the plug.
Pick the plug length and diameter from the tool or item you are fixing and the weight it will hold. Drill the hole with a bit that matches the plug size, clear dust from the hole, and tap the plug flush before driving the screw. Contractors plastic plug sizes such as 10 x 100 suit heavy frame fixings. Wall packs and boxed assortments are good if you tackle many different jobs.

How to choose wall plugs and anchors
The wall type matters more than anything else.
| Fixing type | Best for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Standard wall plugs | Solid brick and block walls | Match plug, drill bit and screw size |
| Plasterboard fixings | Light to medium loads on plasterboard | Self-drill or spring types are quick |
| Cavity anchors | Heavier loads on hollow walls | Expand behind the board to grip |
| Frame fixings | Door and window frames, battens | Long plug and screw in one |
| Heavy-duty anchors | Brackets and heavy items on masonry | Check the load rating |
Wall Plugs & Anchors: frequently asked questions
What size wall plug do I need?
Use the plug size recommended for your screw, typically 5mm to 8mm for general use. The pack states the drill bit size.
Can I use the same wall plug in brick and plasterboard?
No. Brick and block need standard or universal plugs, while hollow plasterboard needs a cavity fixing.
What are wall plug anchors?
They are expanding fixings that grip the inside of a drilled hole, giving more holding power than a simple plug. Used for heavier loads.
Do I need to use wall plugs for every screw?
Screws into timber studs do not need plugs, but masonry and plasterboard usually do. Check the surface behind the plaster.
How deep should I drill for a plug?
Drill slightly deeper than the plug length so dust has space to collect. Mark the depth on the drill bit with tape.
