Will it fit?
Quick checks before you buy: the right bulb cap, the right wall fixing, and tools that fit the battery you already own.
Bulb finder
Check the cap on your old bulb, then choose a colour and brightness.

Tell us your wall and what you are hanging. Always check for hidden pipes and cables before you drill.
Our recommendation
Plastic wall plug
Use plastic wall plugs. Drill with a masonry bit the size shown on the plug pack, and make sure the plug sits in the brick or block, not just the plaster.

Larger wall plug, longer screw
Use larger plastic plugs with a screw long enough to pass through the plaster and well into the brick or block. Match the drill bit to the plug size on the pack.

Frame or hammer fixing
Use frame fixings or hammer fixings, which go deeper into the masonry. For cupboards, radiators or TV brackets, follow the fixing advice from the item's maker.

Plasterboard fixing
Use plasterboard fixings, such as self-drill or hammer-in types.

Cavity anchor or spring toggle
Use cavity fixings that grip behind the board, such as metal cavity anchors (hollow wall anchors) or spring or wing toggles.

Fix into the studs
Plasterboard on its own is not suited to heavy loads. Find the timber or metal studs behind the board with a stud detector and fix into those, or use heavy-duty toggles within the load rating on the pack.

Drill the tile first
Put masking tape over the spot so the bit does not slip. Drill through the tile with a tile bit on a slow speed with hammer action off, then choose the fixing for the wall behind the tile.

Coach screws
Screw straight into the timber, no plug needed. For heavy loads use coach screws, with a pilot hole drilled first.

Wood screws, no plug
Screw straight into the timber, no plug needed. Drill a pilot hole first so the wood does not split.
