Car Repair & Emergency: frequently asked questions

How do I use jump leads safely?

Connect red to the flat battery's positive, then to the good battery's positive. Connect black to the good battery's negative, then to bare metal on the flat car away from the battery. Remove in reverse order, and check your handbook first.

Should I use a warning triangle on the motorway?

No, the Highway Code advises against using warning triangles on motorways. Get yourself and any passengers behind the barrier, away from traffic, and call for help.

What should be in a car emergency kit?

A useful kit includes a first aid kit, warning triangle, torch, hi-vis vest, jump leads, phone charger, blanket and some water.

Is it legal to tow a car with a tow rope?

Yes, but the gap between vehicles must be no more than 4.5 metres, and a rope over 1.5 metres must be clearly visible. The towed car needs a driver and working brakes, and both should drive slowly.
