Varnish
Seal and protect wood with varnish for furniture, doors, floors and exterior joinery. The range includes polyurethane varnish from Rustins, Sadolin and PlastiKote, yacht varnish in satin and gloss from Ronseal, Rustins and 151 Coatings, floor varnish including Ronseal Diamond Hard, and Ronseal interior varnish in tinted shades.
Clear varnish gives a transparent finish in a choice of clear matt varnish, clear satin varnish or gloss, while tinted options such as oak varnish, dark oak, antique pine, ebony and mahogany change the colour at the same time. A clear floor varnish is made to cope with foot traffic, and Ronseal floor varnish and Ronseal varnish lines are widely used on stripped boards. Yacht varnish is a hard-wearing option for exterior timber and marine use.
Sand to a smooth finish, remove dust and apply thin coats with a good brush, lightly sanding between coats once dry. Check recoat times on the tin and work in a well ventilated space away from heat or flame. Matt hides marks, satin balances look and wear and gloss is the toughest to wipe.

| Interior water-based varnish | Furniture, shelving and doors | Quick drying, less yellowing |
| Floor varnish | Wooden floors and stairs | Made to resist foot traffic and scuffs |
| Yacht or exterior varnish | Outdoor doors and woodwork | Flexible and UV resistant; needs upkeep |
| Coloured varnish | Adding colour and protection together | Colour deepens with each coat |
| Matt, satin or gloss sheen | Choosing the final look | Gloss is tougher but shows more flaws |
Varnish: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between varnish and wood stain?
Varnish forms a protective film on top of the wood, while stain colours the wood. Some products combine tint and varnish.
How many coats of varnish should I apply?
Two or three thin coats are common. Follow the product label for the recommended number and drying time.
Can I use yacht varnish indoors?
Yes, though it is made to be tough outdoors. Check the product label for suitable uses.
What varnish is best for floors?
Use a varnish labelled for floors, as it is designed to handle foot traffic and scuffing.
Do I need to sand between coats of varnish?
A light sanding with fine paper between coats helps the next coat key and gives a smoother finish. Wipe off dust before recoating.
