White Paint
Brilliant white covers more jobs than any other colour. This range includes white emulsion paint, white matt emulsion for walls and ceilings, white gloss paint for woodwork, undercoat paint and primer undercoat paint, from Dulux, Leyland Trade, Johnstone's, Berger, Crown and Ronseal.
For walls and ceilings choose a white matt paint, since matt hides flaws and looks even in daylight. Dulux white paint such as Pure Brilliant White is a familiar choice, while trade white emulsion in 10L tubs works out sensibly for larger rooms. Use satin or white gloss on doors, skirting and window frames, which are easier to wipe down.
Bare wood, metal and stained areas need a primer or primer undercoat first, followed by gloss or satin topcoats for a smooth finish. Check whether the product is water-based or solvent-based, since this affects drying, brush cleaning and smell. Compare coverage on the tin with your wall area before buying, and keep a little spare for touch ups. A stain blocking primer is useful on knots and marks.

How to choose white paint
Choose by surface first, then by the shade of white.
| Option | Best for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Brilliant white emulsion | Ceilings and bright, modern walls | Can look stark in north-facing rooms |
| Warm or off-white emulsion | Living rooms and north-facing rooms | Slight yellow or red undertone feels softer |
| Cool white emulsion | South-facing rooms and kitchens | Grey or blue undertone feels crisp and fresh |
| White gloss or satinwood | Skirting, doors and window frames | Oil-based white may yellow over time |
| White ceiling paint | Ceilings | Often flat matt to hide marks and roller lines |
White Paint: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between white matt emulsion and gloss?
Matt emulsion is a flat finish for walls and ceilings. Gloss is shiny and hard wearing, so it is used on woodwork and metal.
Do I need undercoat before white gloss?
Bare or dark surfaces usually need primer and undercoat first. Some paints are self undercoating, so check the tin.
How many coats of white emulsion do I need?
Two coats are normal, and fresh plaster needs a mist coat first. Going from a dark colour may need extra coats.
What is Pure Brilliant White?
It is a very bright white commonly used on ceilings and walls. It can look cooler than softer whites.
Can I paint white over stains?
Use a stain blocking primer first, then apply your white topcoat. Otherwise stains can show through.
