Screws
A big range of screws for woodwork, decking, fixing and general DIY. It includes wood screws, countersunk wood screws, multi-purpose screws, round head screws, twin thread screws, frame screws and concrete screws, in packs of 10 to boxes of 200 and 1000, from Securfix, Securpak, Securit, Rawlplug, Spax and Reisser.
To choose, think about length, gauge and head type. A countersunk wood screw sits flush with the surface and suits most woodwork, while round head screws sit proud and suit brackets. Common sizes such as 4 x 25mm and 4.0 x 40mm fit light fixings, 50mm wood screws grip thicker timber, and 6 x 100mm is for heavier framing. Twin thread screws drive quickly in softwood and chipboard, and zinc plated or coated screws resist rust better indoors and out.
Rule of thumb: the screw should go at least twice as far into the second piece of timber as the thickness of the first. Drill a pilot hole to stop the wood splitting, and use the correct bit size for the head. A box of wood screws works out better value when you have a bigger project. For masonry, use frame screws with plugs rather than standard wood screws.

Screws: frequently asked questions
What size wood screws do I need?
Choose a length that goes about two thirds into the second piece and a gauge that suits the load. Common general sizes are 4 x 40mm and 5 x 50mm.
What is a countersunk screw?
It has a conical head that sits flush or below the surface when driven into a countersunk hole. Most woodworking uses them.
Do I need to drill a pilot hole?
Yes for hardwood and near edges, as it prevents splitting. Softwoods may not need it with self drilling screws.
Can multi purpose screws be used outdoors?
Check the coating. Some are coated for outdoor use, but untreated screws will rust in wet places.
How many screws come in a box?
Pack counts vary from small packs to 200 or 1000. Check the quantity on each product page.
